Lyrics

Real and Alive-o

Walking the ocean’s edge
Thinking ‘bout the things we said
The wind’s blowing from the west
Cools my mind and brings me rest
All my thoughts dissolve in the waves
Sound of surf overtakes them
Underneath my fears and doubts,
Is a voice calling out

To be real and alive-o!

Through the hard times confusion and all
Beginnings had endings, risings had fall
Sometimes no chance to meet in the heart,
Misunderstandings had moved us apart
You’ve seen my beauty, you’ve held my pain
You could have left but here you remain
How do you hold the shifting sand?
You turn to me take my hand

Just be Real and Alive-O
Alive Alive-O
Real and Alive-O
Alive Alive-O

Stories of loving will always be played
Paths to surrender are still being made
You take the risk of being honest and true
It lights the way home to you

If you’re Real and Alive-O
Alive Alive-O
Real and Alive-O
Alive Alive-O

Lobster Shantey

Forty years workin’ on the water
Spending time fishing for the lobster
Freezing body and bones on a vessel alone
Makin’ a living  just like his father
Harvesting the Sea for what it offers
Saving money to build his wife a new home

And it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home
Yes it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home

Waking early before the  sun arises
Checkin’ out the day for no surprises
Wind and waves have taken many men from the Sea!
Swollen fingers dippin’ salt and cold
Tired out he feels he’s getting old
Cut the throttle, hook the  buoy, what’ll it be?

And it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home
Yes it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home

Make and break engines belong to the past
Now prices  move slow  but  life moves so fast
Fishing the  Atlantic  in your Cape  Island  Boat
And holdin’ to the Sea to stay afloat

And it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home
Yes it’s haul in the traps
Take ‘em home

Ocean of Compassion

By the waters of the Atlantic
On the Eastern shores of this land,
There’s a joy in what you are seeing
There’s a truth from where you stand

By the waters of the Atlantic
On the coast of Canada’s past;
There’s a promise given so gently saying ‘Hardships never last!’

For the sea takes your tears
And dries them in the wind
She comforts you, caresses you
You know that she’s your friend
For the sea takes your battles
It’s you that it is the foe
This ocean of compassion
Ebb and flow

By the waters of the Atlantic
On the edge of Canada’s earth,
There’s a sea of movement and changes
From the depths there lies rebirth

For the sea takes your tears
And dries them in the wind
She comforts you, caresses you
You know that she’s your friend
For the sea takes your battles
It’s you that it is your foe
This ocean of compassion
Ebb and flow

Hubbards Harbour Lullaby

When the boats move on the water
And the wind is in the sails
Summer’s in the rigging
And there blows no southern gale
When the sailing ships move freely
With the seagulls flying high
The ships are in the water again

Then the summer days are numbered
The wind begins to chill
The men are strapping on the slings
To make the boats stand still
Changing colors on the shoreline
Tell them sailings at an end
And the boats are in their cradles again
Rocking the South Shore to sleep

In Hubbards Harbour they say
Summer time is best
But Heaven knows the earth gets tired
And needs a rest
The changing seasons
Are like waves upon the Sea
Life moving free

In Hubbards’s Cove now the boats are gone
And winter’s drawing near
The firewood’s been stacked so high
There’s blizzards soon I hear
The beaches are deserted
And the Shore Club’s packed it in
And folks are in their houses again
Rocking the South Shore to sleep
Rocking the South Shore to sleep

Simms Settlement Storm

I was caught
Nowhere to hide
Couldn’t find the peace,
Couldn’t find that place inside
I was trapped inside my fears
Had to face the memories
Buried deep inside those years

The winter night
Brought the wind and snow
A cold reality I came to know
Simms Settlement storm

I was lost
Couldn’t find my head
Didn’t see the danger
Didn’t see the signs up ahead
With a rage burning in me
Couldn’t find relief
To set those dragons free

The winter night
Brought the wind and snow
A cold reality I came to know
Simms Settlement storm

That night the darkness and fear
Had me and all I could hear
Simms Settlement Storm

Safe Harbour

Touch me gently
Kiss my softly
Hold me dearly
And love me slowly

I am sailing on
Onward to Safe Harbour
Storm has ended
Time to rest awhile

Stars are shining
Moonlight’s gleaming
Waves are sounding
Their voice so healing
Love come light my way
Lead me to your harbor

Ocean singing it’s lullaby of peace
Open hearts need harbours
Open hearts need space to move, you know
You are my safe harbour

Queensland

Walking on your sandy shores
Fire in my head and heart
Hear the wind and pounding surf
Answer to a human cry

Standing by your swelling tides
Chilling breeze and mighty sounds
Feel the push and pull of love
Answer to a human cry

Lover of my soul
You touch the wellspring
Love of my soul
You fill the wellspring of my heart

Heal me with your constancy
Heal me with your voice
Ocean elixir
Wellspring of joy
Lover of my soul
You touch the wellspring
Love of my soul
You fill the wellspring of my heart

This Parting

With you and with me
When fancy and free,
When singing and dancing
And laughing were we
The joy that we shared
‘Twas none that compared
Through good times and bad times
A friendship we fared

It carried me
It carried you
It carried us
Further to kind, honest, true

And now by the Sea
To set our love free
I sing to the rolling waves
This parting with thee
By this eastern shore
To love evermore
I pray that the blessings
Of times shared before

Will carry me
Will carry you
Will carry us further
To our shining truth

With you and with me
When fancy and free
When singing and dancing
And laughing were we
The joy that we shared
‘Twas none that compared
Through good times
And bad times
A friendship we shared

It carries me
It carries you
It carries us further
To our shining truth

Saltwater Blues

It’s been a long long journey
From west to east
It’s been a long time coming home
I’ve been cross the country
Around the block
Now I’m chasin’ saltwater foam
I lived a life on the prairies
Under big ol’ prairie skies
And I’ve sung my songs in the Okanagan
With ponderosa’s reachin’ high

But now I got Saltwater blues
I got the sand stuck in my shoes
I got the saltwater blues
And I can’t get enough of that sea

I’ve been tired and worn down
From pain and grief
Been so strong been so tough
Now I found my way
To that eastern Sea
And I just can’t get enough
When this ol’ world
Gets too much to bear
When lonely stays too long
I get down by that big wide water
And listen to the ocean’s song with those

Saltwater blues
I got the sand  stuck in my shoes
Saltwater blues
And I can’t get enough of that sea

It’s been a long long journey
From west to east
It’s been a long time coming home
I’ve been cross the country
Around the block
Now I’m chasin’ saltwater foam
When this ol’ world gets too much to bear
When lonely stays too long
I get down by that big wide water
And listen to the ocean’s song with those

Saltwater blues
I got the sand stuck in my shoes
Saltwater blues
And I can’t get enough
Can’t get enough of that sea

Stemming The Tide

The draggers are out in the harbour
It’s time for the catch to be won
A fisherman’s promised a future
if this time he gets a good run
The ocean cares nothing for justice
The Sea is a land of regret
Why go upon it’s cruel waters
When all that you haul in is debt?

What keeps a spirit from breaking?
What keeps the heart open wide?
Where does strength find you,
When all seems so lost?
When this time you’re stemming the tide,
Stemming the tide?

A fisherman’s life’s full of struggle
There’s danger and risk out at Sea
But passion and love for the fishing,
Keeps him in good company
The hard times won’t stop him from sailing
There’s victory in facing the fears
The ocean’s too deep to be frozen
When the heart is an ocean of tears

What keeps a spirit from breaking?
What keeps the heart open wide?
Where does strength find you,
When all seems so lost?
When this time you’re stemming the tide,
Stemming the tide?
